An Ionic Air Purifier: Can It Do More Harm Than Good?

By Jordan Penner

A few years ago, "Consumer Reports" magazine undertook a detailed and objective evaluation of ionic air purifiers. They concluded that a typically healthy person would actually be better off without one, even though they did mention that such air purifiers could come in handy for those experiencing major medical issues like allergies, asthma and bronchitis.

If you have been considering purchasing an ionic air purifier just for the sake of it and you do not have any kind of acute breathing difficulties as noted earlier, then don't do it - you could end up doing yourself some real harm.

In the first place, there actually is not anything so tiny in the atmosphere doing you any harm that an ionic air purifier could filter out.

It's firmly recommended by "Consumer Reports" and several other reviews that healthy people shouldn't use one of these styles of purifiers. The single exception to this was for a non-smoker who had the misfortune of living with a person who smokes. The only real cure for this is to either encourage the smoker to renounce tobacco or move out of the house, but until the time that either of these takes place, an ionic air purifier will help reduce the horrible smell and discomfort caused by the person who smokes.

The use of an ionic air purifier should only be by those who will see health benefits from it and even then its use should be kept to a minimum. Making use of one just because you have one can jeopardize the earth and encourage the global warming problems, in addition to the damage it will do to your lungs and bronchial tract.

Ionic air purifiers work by producing ozone. Yes, you have heard of this before. It's the same kind of ozone that produced the holes in our planet's outer protective atmospheric layer and in large quantities it is deadly. When you have an ionic air purifier you're in contact with severely high emissions of ozone and it has been established that individuals have ozone in the lungs when using ionic air purifiers.

To sum up, there's much unconfirmed propaganda when it comes to air purifiers, whatever type they are. Instead of demanding technology and science to save us from the difficulties we come across, we really need to be concentrating on halting global warming and not having to rely on electronic devices to allow us to breathe clean air into our lungs. - 30286
