Effective Asthma Home Remedies

By Esther Tan

There are plenty of home remedies that you can actually choose from which could help you achieve relief of your condition during flare ups and attacks. Home remedies of course, should not be treated as your primary treatment during attacks but should only be considered during emergencies where access to rescue/relief medication is not immediately available. Because of the number of home remedies that are available, you would probably find yourself at a loss as to what can really be effective for your condition because you wouldn't want to end up experimenting which ones work while you're already flaring up or having an attack.

What you need is the type of home remedy that has been proven and tested to work by asthmatics all around the world. If you're looking for these types of remedies there are only actually quite a handful. Here are some examples of the most effective home remedies that you can help during those critical times:

Coffee: Dark, steamy and preferably strong. Coffee has even been advised by doctors for asthmatics during times of emergencies. The main component in coffee; theophylline and theobromine works to stop bronchial spasms and break down mucus and open up airways, bringing about relief within just a couple of minutes after ingestion. Taking two cups of brewed coffee (if possible) during emergencies can help bring your condition under control.

Honey: Preferably local, non tampered, non-imported honey. Research has found that inhaling the aroma that rises from pure honey can help relieve asthmatics by breaking down the mucus which blocks the airways and reduce inflammation caused by flare-ups and attacks, making it easier to breathe. Aside from quick relief honey can also be used in conjunction with your conventional medication for prevention. Mixing two teaspoonfuls of honey in a glassful of milk taken every night have been known to prevent onset of allergic reactions and development of mucus which can trigger attacks.

Steam: The easiest to produce and the most readily available home remedy you have is steam. If you happen to be in the worst scenario, with no medications, no coffee, and no honey, then you can settle for steam treatment; unless you have no water supply. Run the shower at its highest heat setting and allow the steam to linger in the bathroom. Inhale the steam that rises to get temporary relief until medical help arrives. Alternately, you can boil some water and put it in a bowl, pan, dish, or any other open container and inhale the steam that rises. Hot steam helps break down the mucus and relieve the airways to allow better airflow.

Remember that home remedies should only be considered during times of crisis and not on a daily basis. While the importance of your rescue medication cannot be emphasized enough, you still need to consider all the possibilities, and in this case, it would be better to have something than nothing at all. - 30286
